Some confusion on the timeline regarding press technique in the NFL. Lots of nuance, here are the 4 types of press techniques you'll see on Sundays.
True press is the old school bump and run type of press coverage. Its aggressive and the CB will re-route the WR immediately.
Press Motor (soft-shoe) is the least aggressive type of press coverage. The CB will "motor" backwards while mirroring the release of the WR. Hands don't shoot until release is declared.
Step-Kick is a combination of the previous two. The CB will take a lateral step but waits to shoot the hands. Most technical and advanced version of press coverage.
A quick jam is a curve ball for the CB to throw at the WR. Only used sparingly, its the most aggressive and has the most risk. Purpose is to throw the WR off at the snap.
Ideally a press man CB will have mastery of multiple techniques and be able to use them depending on the situation. Guys like Sherman, Revis, and Gilmore can/could do all of these at a high level.
