Last week I was invited for a talk to the XR Lounge @unity3d. It was great to hang out w @timoni @gekido @3duaun et al. One super interesting question came up: what do you think is an area of VR that is currently underfunded and critical to the success of the technology? https://twitter.com/gekido/status/1294736169146527744
1. I find underdeveloped the seemeless integration of VR with our current platforms. @wasbuxton often says: “the next big thing is not a thing, but that things work together”. Basically we need to be able to multitask inside VR. As of now VR is not ready for reality.
2. Democratization of authoring tools. My latest focus on this area is on research tools. In that I have released the #MicrosoftRocketbox avatars, and I am building engines to use and animate them to be released during this 2020. https://github.com/microsoft/Microsoft-Rocketbox
I have also joined @andresmh and @What2DoNext this year organizing the @Snapchat Creative AR Storytelling Challenge to further authoring of stories. https://imx.acm.org/2020/creative-challenge/
Btw I hope the release and support that my team and I are giving of the #MicrosoftRocketbox can help on this grand challenge of unified identity. Your avatar should be like your passport: you should be able to bring it everywhere no mater who printed it https://twitter.com/gekido/status/1295804646355689472?s=21 https://twitter.com/gekido/status/1295804646355689472
For the SnapResearch challenge: Here is the awesome outcome of 4 months of hard work. As more so lately I was particularly interested on system building projects and I joined the teams at @DalhousieU and @wallacelages at VirginiaTech as their mentor https://research.snap.com/news/detail/snap-creative-challenge-acm-imx-2020/
And the work continues... this time we hope to engage with even more people on our 2 day workshop at @ACM_CSCW https://twitter.com/ilyena/status/1286203909451776002?s=21 https://twitter.com/ilyena/status/1286203909451776002
Note that I often talk about VR and AR indistinctively on purpose because I think for many aspects it is too early to split into two. And also because down the line they might become one again. They are just two sides of the visual spectrum of spatial computing.
And now that I think I have sort of answered my way out of this. I’d like to hear the thoughts of @auract, @anthony_steed, @What2DoNext, @melslater, @StanfordVR, @julenka, @Eyal_Ofek, @dervali, @hrvojebenko and others!
Check out the thread for other replies but yes certainly VR on education is really underfunded and critical! https://twitter.com/what2donext/status/1296052556515414037?s=21 https://twitter.com/what2donext/status/1296052556515414037
