something i've started doing at the beginning of every project is creating a design + eng chat separate from the broader team

a short thread on why i think this is a really important part of shipping quality work 👇
my design/eng chats are mainly limited to ICs (no managers allowed đźš·)

this creates a chill, low-pressure space to talk about the project without people feeling like theyre being assessed or things getting misconstrued
it also becomes a safe space for me to complain about quality and polish without people feeling like they are being called out in front of their managers or XFN peers
this works the other way too!

having a separate channel lowers the pressure for eng to ask me questions or talk about edge cases that i might have missed

i can tweak some stuff, send it back to the thread and we can iterate collaboratively through any roadblocks
having everyone in one thread prevents the same conversations from happening over and over again

if the android team asks a great question, the iOS team benefits from that conversation too since we're all in one place

much better than a bunch of disconnected 1:1 threads
these chats end up being some of the most productive discussions i have during a project!

everyone wins:

i stay very involved in execution

eng dont feel lost/abandoned

i gain empathy for what eng is going through

eng gains empathy for why quality and craft is important

🤗
i have been doing this for a while with great success, but i think its even more important now with everyone being remote

communication 🤝 quality
