One hundred years ago today on August 18, 1920 American women were granted the right to vote. In 1960 Sirima Ratwatte Dias Bandaranaike, commonly known as Sirimavo Bandaranaike, became the world's first female prime minister, when she became Prime Minister of Sri Lanka. 1/4
Gold Meir Meir was elected prime minister of Israel on March 17, 1969. The first woman to serve as president of a country was Isabel Martínez de Perón of Argentina in 1974 (she succeeded her husband). The first woman elected president was Vigdís Finnbogadóttir of Iceland. 2/4
Margaret Thatcher was prime minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990. The list goes on, yet the U.S. has never had a woman president or vice president in 100 years. 3/4
