Someone sent me a message letting me know that a student selected "WAP" as their walk-up song citing it as an empowerment anthem. I figured this was going to happen and am happy the instructor let me know because it raises a good point about how we respond to students.
If we ask students for their opinion, we damn well need to be prepared for responses that may or may not comport with our preferences or beliefs. This is THEIR walk-up song. It's not about us. There are VERY few songs that would give me pause about including on the class playlist
As examples, I've included "Earl Had to Die," "Oochie Wally," "Shimmy Shimmy Ya," and "The Bald Cadaver" on class playlists. The ONLY time I've ever asked a student for an alternative song (in confidence after class) was when "Indian Outlaw" was selected by a non-Native student.
These are not meant to be GOOD playlists but are mechanisms to get to know our students a bit better and perhaps use them in innovative ways throughout the course. All that said, add their songs and create one of the most ridiculous Spotify playlists possible.
@HilaryMatfess, I know you'll love this!
