5/8 TX legislated the all white primary in 1923, fearful that Black women were managing to vote. Most states at 1 point in their history allowed declarant immigrants (non-citizens) to vote, but suffragists worked w/ nativists to disfranchise immigrants. http://bit.ly/30fyr9Z

7/8 We’re seeing the same tension at play now. Republicans are pursuing disfranchisement including voter ID laws, shutting down DMVs, limiting early voting, closing polling sites, & restricting mail-in voting, which is as secure & safe as in-person voting https://bit.ly/318hjFK
8/8 Democrats are seeking ways to further enfranchise their supporters, looking at DC & Puerto Rico statehood, enfranchising the formerly incarcerated, & expanding mail-in & early voting. Both impulses are in response to political competition, but 1 is far healthier for democracy
