Thread: So I see English Lit is trending on here after being attacked as an A Level subject. There are far too many people who believe that literature is simply not important & underestimate its abilities. The stigma in society that implies one who is more inclined toward
science and maths will somehow be more successful in life, & that one who is passionate about literature and other art forms will be destined to a life of low-paying jobs & unsatisfying careers NEEDS TO STOP. Literature is far from insignificant...
To me, it serves as a gateway to learning of the past and expanding my knowledge and understanding of the world. Here are just a few reasons why studying literature *is* important:
Firstly, it opens our eyes, enabling us to see more than what is just on the surface. With this, we begin to learn, ask questions, and build our intuitions and instincts. Reading expands these skills, learning the importance of hidden meanings so that we may come to conclusions.
Secondly, literature invites us to address humanity. In considering both sides of an argument, we learn to act with compassion & empathy as we address human nature & conditions which affect people. Whether it be through poems, essays, novels, or short stories, this is possible.
Literature is important and necessary. It provides growth, strengthens our minds, and gives us the ability to think outside the box. There are so many other reasons why it’s important which I could type out but I’m tired - tired and sad of having to constantly defend my subject.
