This victory comes after a three-day long virtual preliminary injunction hearing, and decades upon decades of LDF cases seeking to undo discriminatory, anti-Black dress and grooming policies.
The practice of institutionalizing discriminatory grooming policies dates back to desegregation. LDF’s “Status of School Desegregation” report from 1970 describes some of the policies that were implemented as Black students began attending formerly all-white schools.
#NaturalHair discrimination wasn't limited to the classroom. One of LDF’s early discrimination cases was against a racist dress code applied to Delta airlines flight attendants.
Natural hair discrimination is simply racial discrimination by another name & its utility is the preservation of all-white spaces. It cannot stand. https://twitter.com/KultureHub/status/1272941241240518657?s=20
In addition to our cases, LDF advocates ardently for the passage of the #CROWNact and the outlawing of white supremacist policies that seek to exclude Black people.
