I spent the most of last year immersed in the upper admin of VT.
I personally believe the plan among the Pres/Prov has *always* been, since early June, to go online the week of Aug 24th: right around the tuition/fee reimbursement deadline.
Why the pretending? Imo, Aux services. https://twitter.com/14floating/status/1295537245328416771

Auxillary services- everything 'non-academic' at VT- are legally required to be self-funded separately from tuition (and endowment?); hence the fees. Roughly 90% of the comp fees go to aux staff salaries each year.
While tuition is cheaper online, *fee* rates significantly drop.

If Sands declares online-only like he indubitably knows is epidemically necessary, parents of UGs will demand online rates (justifiably).
The cut in fee income would end up at *drastic* staff shedding; and 2021-2023, the Uni would probs die, having lost much of its staff talent.

Obvs, I don't want to see VT staff furloughed en mass.
BUT, there were other options than this deception & sacrificing of a few hundred (or thousand, tbd) on the COVID altar this week & next.
They *could* have respected the rest of us enough to have honest open discussion.

But at VT, that's not how it works.
Everything is behind-closed doors need-to-know discussions only.
Whether it's serially abusive advisors, ableist HR staff, toxic depts, or bigoted cronyist student govt leaders- Earnestly tackling difficult problems just isn't the VT culture.

PS: If you've been wondering where I've been since May:
Home, having nightmares about how all this was gonna go down, ashamed I couldn't do more to prevent this atrocity when it was my responsibility to try.
Serious s/o to all @ GSA, FS, DAC, Grad School, SA for still pushing.
