two years ago i started writing a hockey/figure skating YA romance bc i fancasted noah centineo as my main character (thanks to TATBILB) & that little book would go on to become the 1st i wrote and queried. i never signed that book (and looking back it's obvious why lmfao).
but i did sign the book after that. a new adult contemp romance. to a new agent at a small agency. i thought i could be *the one* who broke out from a smaller agency and sold big five. that agent ended up leaving, so i teamed up w/ a new book under a diff agent at the same agency
in December 2019, i decided i wanted to start fresh in 2020. I was so scared, but left the agency I was with and began querying a new project that I'd poured all my time into for months. It was incredibly different than my usual projects, but I kept pushing through the rejections
5 months later, I received interest from a few agents. Dwindling them down to one was difficult at first, until I spoke with my new agent and I just *knew* she had the same vision for my career as I did. Our phone call flowed well and I was so happy when I hung up the phone.
I ended up letting the other agents know ahead of schedule that I would be signing with her because I was so blown away by our call.
Anyway, this is a PSA for whoever is reading this...if you're still in the query trenches & things are rough/rocky please keep pushing.
Your words matter.
I know querying can be draining and leave you questioning if you're good enough, but it's important to remember why you started. Why you decided to start writing that 1st draft. Your words will always be a part of you. No matter how many rejections roll in.
Querying is scary. Putting yourself and the work you've poured so much time into out for others to see is scary. I wanted to give up. I constantly wondered why I put myself through the pain of rejections, but all it takes is one person to see your work in the way you do.
I'm not the type to tell you to grow a thicker skin, because mine is very thin, but you can use this time for something positive. Reevaluate your query/pages and have others who have never seen it before look, too. WRITE ANOTHER BOOK. Stay busy. Use this time to grow!!!!
End Note: Please fight for your career. If you're not receiving what you want from someone, talk to them about it. If you don't think the issue can be resolved -- do what you need to do for your career. I was terrified I would never find another agent again, but I did.
