Avoid politicisation. Don’t focus only on epidemics, provide value day-day & have capacity prevent/prepare/respond & surge as needed. If just focus on epidemics over time funding drifts away. Address issues important all the time & you’ll be better able to address epidemics.
Public health based on trust.Locally owned,local decision making,shared information,appreciation of context, inequality,culture,language. Social,Behavour, education,design,urban/rural, transport as critical as medical. Willing speak truth to power. Independent. Open & transparent
Public health serves is with & for the public. Yes inevitable political, but not politicised. Has to be independent & be open, transparent, honest with citizens
I have been privileged over many decades & throughout 2020 work with huge number of incredible professionals @PHE_uk in U.K. & around the world (Ebola in West Africa & DRC), under appreciated & under-invested for many many years.
Challenge of public health is it is never appreciated how important it is until it is too late. Easy to blame if/when things go wrong. Lessons and if any blame invariably lies elsewhere. Strong trusted public health institutions are fundamental to a civilised society.
