THREAD ! of favourite Words by Gulzar sahab : (i might include translations but im doing on the spot and i am v willing to discuss them!)
lets begin with "chhaiyyan chhaiyyan"! the song that drew me in and began an iconic phase... "chhaiyyan" is a hindustani word related to "chhaon" in hindi....i've often seen it mistranslated as "shadow" BUT its supposed to mean "shade"
featuring gems like:
"jinke sarr hou ishq ki chhaon, paaon ke neechey jannat hogi"
("those who walk in the shade of love, must have paradise beneath their feet")
"wou yaar mera khushboo ki tarah, hou jiski zubaan urdu ki tarah" WHAT THE FUCK CAN U HEAR ME SCREAM

(translation: "the beloved friend is like a sweet aroma whose words are as elegant as urdu") i also love to imagine a suggestion that urdu itself is fragrant!
"taveez bana ke pehenun usse, aayat ki tarah mil jaaye kahin" (i shall wear an amulet if the beloved is found in holy verse) 
dil tou bachcha hai ji from ishqiya! sometimes, songs are good without context, but soo much better within context...this one is brilliant within context i think...i suits khaalu jaan's character
"haaye zor kare, kitna shor kare, bewajah baaton pe ainwayi ghaur kare"

the entire song is khalujaan justifying his Own feelings, not necessarily expressing his feelings themselves. a romantic song abt the beloved wouldn't make sense.. and so we have a song that says "the heart is young, it stays young"
ALSO important is the distinction between 'the heart never grows up' and 'the heart stays young' which... is a Tad bit more positive i think?
"aisi udaasi baithi hai dil pey, hasne se ghabraa rahein hain" (heavy sadness weighs on my heart, now even laughing makes me feel uneasy)
"main chaand nigal gayi" (i swallowed the moon) is also thr title of one of his books and is. a cool combination of words i think
i LOVE his use of onomatopoeia (sounds in words, essentially)..he does it a lot "chhaiyyan chhaiyyan" "chhaliya chhaliya" "chappa chappa" "chhaii chhappa chhaii" and like. Many More. and this is one of the better examples
most of his work is about evoking the Experience of Feeling (as opposed to descriptions) and arguably relatedly, there is a lot of synethesia to be found here (describing one sense by use of another) .an example is "humne dekhi hai unn aakhon ki mehekti khushboo"
