In debate on NewsX last night Radia Vir Sanghvi explained why English-speaking people like him had lost control of the narrative on English language news channels. 1/n
With typical Lutyens derision, he blamed it on Hindi-speaking panelists on these channels, and the fact that even some debates were being conducted in Hindi on these channels. 2/n
One suspects Sanghvi is speaking for his ilk as well as the old English-speaking viewers who enjoyed a virtual monopoly over the discourse since 1947, irrespective of what a vast majority of Indians thought or wanted, or which govt was in power. 3/n
Sanghvi’s lament suggests that things have changed dramatically in the last few years. Thapar is out, Barkha is out and Rajdeep is an object of ridicule. Also, no one watches NDTV, except perhaps a few old Indian and new Pakistani viewers. 4/n
Sanghvi’s snooty dismissal of the democratisation of English language news channels, and the drowning out of deracinated and disconnected journalists like him, is also reflective of the mindset of Cong High Command, which has lost touch with the nation’s pulse. 5/n
They all can blame it on us and wallow is shared misery, but Rahul must not forget that only Cong has elections to lose. n/n
