We can’t give visitors tours of our collections in person at the moment, but perhaps you can join us for a #TwitterTour?
Today we are virtually opening our doors to the palaeontology collections, which include over 600,000 fossils.

Our fossil collections are housed @Museum_Cardiff

Some are on permanent display in our Evolution of Wales gallery, some are used for temporary exhibitions such as #FossilSwamp, but others are in our stores behind the scenes

#TakeoverTuesday #TwitterTour
Most of our animal fossils are kept in our main fossil store, housed in stacks of wooden drawers within special space-saving roller-racking

Most fossils are kept in boxes, labelled with details of their scientific name, collection locality and geological dating

#TakeoverTuesday
Some larger fossils are protected with individually-cut foam drawer inlays, to stop them from moving around and getting damaged

These are vertebrae (back bones) from the Jurassic plesiosaur Cryptoclidus

#TakeoverTuesday #TwitterTour
The fossils are stored in order of age, based on the geological period when they lived

Our oldest are 570 million yrs old from Carmarthenshire, and may be attachment discs for soft corals

Youngest? Ice Age fossils such as this mammoth skin, only thousands of years old
Some of our fossils are so tiny that they are kept in microscope slides

We also have lots of thin sections - very thin slices of fossils stuck to glass slides, used for studying detailed anatomy

These are all stored in shallow drawers in special cabinets

#TakeoverTuesday
Our very large fossils are kept in a second store

Our large ammonites have individual skates, which allow them to be easily moved

We keep large marine reptiles on extra-strong, roll-out racking

#TakeoverTuesday #TwitterTour
Our second store also houses our fossil plant collection. This includes thousands of fossils collected from Welsh coal mines

Museum scientists study the fossils to discover changes in Wales' vegetation in response to climate change 300 million years ago
