25 years ago yesterday, @MarcoVanBasten bid an emotional farewell to @acmilan, and to professional football, at the San Siro aged just 28. Even Fabio Capello got a little bit weepy.
Van Basten, who had been sidelined for the previous two years with a recurring ankle injury, had been named
@FIFAcom World Player of the Year in 1992, and won the Ballon D'or three times, in a career that saw him score more than 300 goals for @AFCAjax, @acmilan, and @KNVB.

Dubbed the "Swan Of Utrecht" for his inimitable elegance, Van Basten is considered one of the greatest, most complete footballers of all time. Both Fabio Capello, and Arrigo Sacchi consider him to be the greatest player they ever coached, the former bracketing him with @Ronaldo.
“He was elegance personified. He could score in millions of different ways, and always with an unbelievable touch of class..." explained @marceldesailly, who arrived in Milan towards the of Marco's time , but had faced off against him with @OM_English.
"He had no weak points – he was completely two-footed, and he was strong with his head, but he didn’t just score goals, he also created many, many assists. It is a shame that he stopped playing at such a young age."
