[1/15] THREAD: What went wrong? A detailed analysis of FC Barcelona's transfers under President Bartomeu from 2014-2020. #Barca #Barcelona #Bartomeu #BarcaBayern
[2/15] We'll start with a summary of Barca's transfers 2014-2020. Barca spent €1.1B (€0.5B net) on 33 players: 10 forwards, 7 mids & 16 defenders. The forwards cost €496M. 63% of the 33 players were under 25yrs. Barca has retained 48% of its purchases. #Barca #BarcaBayern
[3/15] Notes
Defenders purchased by Barca had an avg. of 20 apps per season. That is lower that the 45 & 32 managed by midfielders & forwards respectively.
Of the10 forwards Barca spent €496M on, only @LuisSuarez9 has performed well & consistently.

[4/15] Moving on to year-by-year transfers. 14/15 was Barca's best year. They bought Suarez, Rakitic, Ter Stegen & Bravo, all of whom served the club well & delivered the UCL trophy. There still were some questionable purchases: Mathieu (30) & Vermaelen (26). #Barca #BarcaBayern
[5/15] In 15/16, Barca only bought 2 players because their UCL-winning squad was strong. Unfortunately, Turan & Vidal were costly flops. Barca sold 10 players that season, including Xavi & Pedro, so this was a missed opportunity to replenish the squad. #Barca #BarcaBayern
[6/15] 16/17 was a bad year. All 6 players purchased didn't live up to expectation. Gomes, Alcácer, Digne, Cillessen & Denis Suárez all left the club within 3 years. Umtiti is the only player remaining. He 116 apps but has missed 66 games due to knee injuries. #Barca #BarcaBayern
[7/15] 17/18 is the most disastrous & costly year for Barca. Dembele (€138M) has 74 apps (19g+17a) & missed 81 games due to injury. Coutinho (€145M) scored 2 goals for Bayern against Barca. Semedo (€36M) was exposed by Davies. The rest flopped & were sold. #Barca #BarcaBayern
[8/15] 18/19 was okay-ish. Even though Malcolm didn't get minutes & was eventually sold, Lenglet, Arthur & Todibo were good business. It's unfortunate that Arthur was sold & Todibo is out on loan. Vidal was okay for the price, but clearly not what Barca need. #Barca #BarcaBayern
[9/15] The highlight of 19/20 was the misguided purchase of Griezmann. His natural position (2nd striker) is not available & he has struggled to adapt to LW. De Jong was an excellent purchase. The jury is still out on Neto & Firpo because of lack of playtime. #Barca #BarcaBayern
[10/15] Here is a few of the high value players who have failed to perform at Barca. All three €100M+ purchases started on the bench during the #BarcaBayern UCL match. One of them was on the opposition bench. Disaster!

[11/15] Let's look at transfers from La Masia. From 2014-2020, only 18 players were promoted to the First Team. Only 8 (44%) got the chance to play & only 6 (33%) made 10+ apps. The rise of Fati/Puig is countered by the selling of talents like Cuccurela/Perez. #Barca #BarcaBayern
[12/15] Notes
On November 25, 2012, Barca played against Valencia with a starting 11 fully comprised of La Masia graduates. However, from 2014-2020, Barca has only promoted 18 players. This is due to Bartomeu's La Masia 360 program that has largely failed. #Barca #BarcaBayern

[13/15] Barca has the biggest football club wage bill on earth (€4.2M per week). What's even scarier is how many years the 30yrs+ players have on their contracts. Fixing this wage bill & moving on veteran players will be Barca's biggest challenge. #Barca #BarcaBayern #Bartomeu
[14/15] Here are some of my suggestions for how Barca should proceed to, in order to prevent the club from becoming the next AC Milan. Do you agree with my suggestions? What do you think Barca should do to restructure the team? #Barca #BarcaBayern #Bartomeu
