Every single day there are evictions, or threats of evictions. THERE ARE NO PARKS LEFT ON THE @MPRB LIST TO SEND ALL THESE PEOPLE THREATENDED WITH EVICTION. I would really like to know, @AloCanoMN @MayorFrey, where are folks supposed to go? https://twitter.com/niquitina/status/1295486842985480193
And what harm happens when you drop folks at random into established communities? SIGNIFICANT HARM. You can’t just drop a QTBIPOC person, or someone who is elderly and disabled into certain camps. You just can’t. If you were on the ground in any material way you would know this.
Every single eviction, someone loses *all* of their belongings. A QTBIPOC resident showed up after their stuff was bulldozed & was TRAUMATIZED. These folks do not have safe housing options & there is zero help/ there’s a massive shortage of case workers. What should they do?
People evicted from Powderhorn were taken to Franklin Steele Park by the police & told they would have hot meals there. They are not getting what the cops promised, I’ve had to buy dinner for them myself. Evictions make it IMPOSSIBLE to do food outreach, even harder when cops lie
We are working as hard as we can to do the city’s job for you. We are an all volunteer force distributing 2500 meals per week, doing people’s laundry in our homes, doing street medic work, replacing people’s homes after you bulldoze them. We are fucking tired but we are organized
We are trying to just stop the bleeding until we get housing for these people. Which you could do with the wave of your hand and purchase existing buildings. It’s criminal that you sit idle and perpetuate this absolute humanitarian crisis.
Here’s one crisis. Physical safety. When there aren’t physical walls around people lots of harm happens. This was after the tornado warning Friday. I called commissioners asking to open bathrooms, churches, nat’l guard armory but could not establish safe shelter. This is criminal
Not to mention physical safety of WOMEN AND CHILDREN IN THE CAMPS. All of the DV shelter beds are full. *Many* of the women I ask about being open to shelter are terrified because they were assaulted in a shelter. This is a rule, not exception.
People playing devil’s advocate always bring up the women and children who use parks for recreation. What about the women and children WHO LIVE IN THE PARK BECAUSE OUR CITY WON’T GIVE THEM HOUSING
When I ran a supply drive for people displaced by the evictions and the storm in the empty parking lot of MPRB, FIVE cops showed up to send me packing. After an hour of arguing I convinced them to let me stay. These people would rather protect a parking lot than human beings.
We really need supplies, & funds for supplies. For over 20 camps. Every & all day we are dealing with the aftermath of constant evictions & rehoming traumatized folks.
We hate asking. This should be the city’s job. But we need you.
