'Psychological Safety' is the freedom someone feels to express a difference of opinion or challenge leadership, without fear of what will happen.
A lot of people talk about trust as the foundation of a strong team, but influential research from Google found that psychological safety comes first.
Why's it being talked about now? One reason is #BlackLivesMatter
. Organisations are seeking equality, but it’s hard to make progress if the people who need hearing don’t feel able to speak.

Another reason is #Covid19. As more people work from home, it’s showing that some teams aren’t healthy – they don’t connect and it becomes even harder to have tough conversations.
So how can you create #PsychologicalSafety in your organisation? One way is being vulnerable, which is about showing as much of yourself as possible.
Another is curiosity. A curious person asks questions of others, assumes the best, and assumes that through their questions they can get at something helpful.
Psychological Safety is not something you ever 'achieve'. It’s just something you’re always working on. It's a journey!
