Look everyone loves to hate on journos. It’s fun to do. Cathartic. But if you want to see how important they are just reciew the stories that just one determined journo has broken.
Nurses being sent back and forth between isolation facilities and EDs. https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/new-zealand/2020/07/coronavirus-ministry-of-health-clamps-down-as-nurses-flit-between-managed-isolation-facilities-hospital-wards.html
Security guards sleeping on the job at quarantine hotels. https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/new-zealand/2020/07/investigations-launched-after-claims-of-managed-isolation-security-guards-falling-asleep-on-the-job.html
Airport bus drivers not being tested (this is where the government narrative began falling apart). https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/new-zealand/2020/08/coronavirus-ministry-of-health-unsure-how-many-of-new-zealand-s-covid-19-bus-drivers-are-being-tested.html
Testing centres being overwhelmed. https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/new-zealand/2020/08/covid-19-doctors-overwhelmed-at-high-numbers-of-aucklanders-taking-tests.html
Non-testing of border staff. https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/new-zealand/2020/08/nearly-two-thirds-of-nz-s-covid-19-border-isolation-staff-had-never-been-tested-a-week-ago.html
The reality is that without muckraking journos like @MichaelMorrah, we just wouldn’t know about a hell of a lot of bad stuff going on. There’s a reason they’re supposed to be the fourth estate of the realm.
So when people boycott the Herald because they hate Hosking or whatever, they’re not hurting Hosking. They’re just making it easier for bodies like Auckland Council to get away with stuff.
