Alright well now I’ve got that out of my system, here are the lukewarm takes to which I would have subjected the people I say morning prayer with: https://twitter.com/christiegilf/status/1295640466160001026
1. Abigail is quite a divisive figure because some scholars read her as an undeveloped 2 dimensional ‘perfect wife’ figure...
I want to push back here because her words align her with the ‘wise woman’ type that appears in the HB
And more than that, she fulfils something of a prophetic role in the narrative as she essentially foretells David’s reign
2. She’s a WIDOW! Which is fun for me
The word ‘widow’ isn’t actually used in the text but that’s probably because there’s a very quick turn around between Nabal’s death and David marrying her
But, you know, dead husband etc
3. Finally: the chopping her out of the lectionary thing is the same as what often happens to Tamar in Gen 38. Just because a text is slightly adjacent to the trajectory of the narrative doesn’t make it dispensable
ESPECIALLY when it is one of the rare texts that features a woman doing things
Maybe these texts might have originally been in a different location, but there are important thematic connects that result from where they ended up, so they can’t just be glossed over
Basically: put Abigail back!!!! Here endeth the thread
