This was built to the specifications of DC building codes, went through a PUD process, includes 14 affordable units, is located directly across the street from a metro station and a grocery store and is 78 ft tall after meticulous review by the ANC & Zoning Commission. https://twitter.com/johnmanuelarias/status/1295408610168668160
Miss me with the idea that this is a "monstrosity", it is an entirely appropriate project that is mixed use, includes affordable housing, a .3 parking space to unit ratio and facilitates more housing in a city with a housing crisis. Personal aesthetics shouldn't dictate housing.
There were many public meetings for this particular project, engagement with residents by the developer and input from the ANC. 6B votes 8-0 to endorse this project & support the PUD application before the Zoning Commission.
Aside from providing transit oriented housing, affordable housing & additional retail space the developer provided $50k to improve a pedestrian plaza, furnish two playgrounds with new equipment and provided $5k for the planting of new trees done by a nonprofit.
They also closed several curb cuts making the pedestrian environment safer, included a green roof & the only people who showed up to testify before the Zoning Commission were 8 proponents of the project, and only 1 opponent, which is pretty unprecedented in DC.
