In 2017 when I just moved to Lagos, Nigeria I needed a job so that I could take care of myself and save for a Camera which I didn’t have at that point. Our company had this job to document the 2017 Art X and I was excited about it.
I went for the briefing and I was ready to begin the next day. I was going coming from Ojodu Berger to Civic center in Victoria Island everyday and for someone that just moved, it wasn’t easy. I was to report to the venue by 8am and sometimes close by 10pm which means...
... I will wake by 5am, get myself ready and sometimes get home by 12am.
On this particular night, I closed by 10:30 pm and I needed to get to OBALENDE where I will get a bus back to the mainland. I entered Keke from Eko Hotel to OBALENDE
before 20 minutes I was at the park looking for a Bus that will take me to Ojodu Berger. By this time it was almost 11pm and we were still waiting for 5 more passengers to complete the bus before we could make the trip. (Please don’t ask me why I didn’t use an Uber or Taxify).
The driver noticed that no one was coming , he decided to make the trip back to the mainland but angry that he just lost about N1,500 . I sat on the wooden seat holding on my bag (I had camera and 2 lenses inside) as if my life depended on it.
I was enjoying the lights and signage on 3rd mainland bridge when suddenly the bus lost its acceleration noise. Everyone in the bus started shouting at the driver, “ why you stop us for here” you wan make them come rob us” and the bus eventually stopped.
We all came down in the middle of the night at 3rd mainland bridge, the night breeze was cooler than normal, I hugged the camera bag even harder to myself. So many thoughts run through my head, “what if they area boys come and collect this camera bag that is not even mine”
“what if I can’t get any other bus to take me back to the mainland “ I think I was the only passenger that didn’t say anything to the driver. It was scary and I don’t have words to explain how I felt that night.
After about 35 minutes of the driver struggling with the bus, it eventually picked up and we all shouted “thank you Jesus”
We all entered the bus and the speed the driver drove that night was something to be recorded. But I was glad I left 3rd mainland with the gear 😂
I entered the house about 12:35 am , sat down, copied the cards, charged the camera batteries and went to bed. And I was up by 5am and the routine continued.
Looking back ,I’m grateful for the experience because it made me understand that there’s no comfort in chasing your dreams
The essence of this thread is to encourage you as you’re starting out! The discomfort will be worth it one day! If you want your dream so much, get up and do something about it. Sometimes it will mean you getting a Job to fund your dreams.
