collection of inter-related animal fables (Neeti katha) in Sanskrit verse and prose.

What is Panchatantra.. ?
-Panchatantra ( Five Treatises) an ancient "Indian"

These Neeti katha (fables) are much older one, having been passed down generations orally(this oral practice in indian history is common, like in vedas/upanishads/ etc..)
The word “Panchatantra” is from sanskrit,
It's a combination of the words *Pancha – "five",
*Tantra – weave(construct).
It means "Interweaving five skeins of traditions and teachings into a text"

What it contains..? 
As we know Panchatantra has 5 major parts/treatises.Each part consists of a primary frame story which in turn contains stories within it.
As i said above,the Panchatantra is a niti-shastra(textbook of niti)
The word Neeti means “the wise conduct of life”

The five main heading of stories are:
1) Mitra-bheda -Loss of Friends
2) Mitra-lābha -Winning of Friends
3) Kākolūkīyam-On Crows and Owls
4) Labdhapraṇāśam - Loss of Gains
5) Aparīkṣitakārakaṃ - On Hasty Actions.

What's the need of Panchatantra??
In first part,
i.e. In mitra-beda, It mainly deals with the importance of having good friends the outcome of having association with cunning people.

Mitra-samprapti( second part).
Which will focus only on how to build, maintain friendships among like-minded people of different talents.
Also tells how friends can prove loyal and useful in times of peril(in difficult time).

Third part: Kakolukiyam.
Here, This part is some what realted to politics, this part stresses on the fact that one should be cautious and alert of a friend who was formerly an enemy.

This fourth part stresses on the importance of a man’s "presence of mind" during emergency situations.

It explains the importance of discriminative intelligence in the accomplishment of one’s task in untested situations.

These panchantra stories are mostly widely known stories, and translated to every languages in india, and also 50+ languages around the world.
The name Panchatantra changed depending on different cultures.

We have already heard these fables in our childhood days, and our duty is to give proper knowledge to our younger generations about this stories.
