#BecauseOfBernie I saw a pathway to run an unapologetically progressive campaign that centered my neighbors who have been left behind and ignored by our political system -- that knocking doors, acting boldly, and building trust is how we expand our democracy.
In 2018, he invited me & @SummerForPA to open for him at a rally in #Pgh. Afterward, he spent nearly 30 minutes listening to us on how we ran our campaign.

We sat across the table from him.

Then, he asked simply, "How did you do it?" and leaned back in his chair.
We told him how we built campaigns from the ground up noting the 10s of thousands of doors we knocked. We told him how we ran on values & vision that all the consultants said we shouldn't, but knew it was the morally right thing to do for the people we were trying to represent.
We recounted how we didn't take any corporate PAC $ & relied on small $ donors.

He sat back, silently, with a smile slowly growing on his face, and finally, he spoke.

"Yes! You get!"

He clapped his hands together & was full-on beaming.
Politics can be incredibly transactional.

That summer, I met a lot of politicians & ppl in the political class. Many of those interactions felt like ppl being dismissive of our tactics, platform, and movement. They were eager to talk over my experience with their own advice.
He didn't have to listen to two newly elected PA state reps, but he did.

He made me feel like an equal and a part of something incredibly necessary and powerful.

#BecauseOfBernie I will continue to build our people-powered movement in love, justice, & compassion.
Also ... my cousin took me to my first Bernie rally and 3 years later I got to introduce her (and her son) to Bernie.
