I don’t talk about this often, but my partner died on 9/11. She was at a meeting in the Towers. One of the hardest things about that time was the way people who were my political enemies rushed to my side, wanting me to stand with them for a war against Islam. (thread)
It was gross on a personal level, and even more gross on a national level, when the Republicans held their conference in a city full of BIPOC, queer, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Sikh, and other non-Christian people.
When my father died of COVID-19, none of those people reached out to me. None of them offered their condolences. Same when my niece died of an overdose in the opioid crisis decimating Appalachia.
I’m exhausted by loved ones dying from a failure of governance. I’m even more exhausted by the idea that only some deaths matter. There is a lot about the current Democratic ticket I don’t like, but I am tired of people dying because of the craven indifference of our government.
I recognize the limitations of the Democratic Party and its nominees. But I’m not willing to sacrifice more loved ones to the craven indifference of the Republican Party. Vote #Biden2020.
