I want to talk about the fact that this Government is using the cover of coronavirus to attack your super.
Although they’re saying this attack is a response to the recession, the truth is they have had this planned for a very long time: https://www.smh.com.au/politics/federal/coalition-mps-rebel-against-planned-increases-to-superannuation-20190722-p529j8.htm
They’ve forced workers - overwhelmingly young people, women, and those in insecure work - to fund their own crisis response and drain their superannuation. Over 600,000 people now have empty super accounts.
(Remember they announced the early release scheme while they were still dismissing a wage subsidy as unnecessary.)
They stood by and did nothing while workers who were made unemployed got letters of demand from their landlords saying to withdraw their super to pay rent https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2020/apr/02/real-estate-agents-criticised-for-suggesting-tenants-consider-using-superannuation-to-pay-rent
And now they're threatening to take away the most effective method to restore retirement incomes for working Australians, while simultaneously refusing to deliver a jobs plan to pull our country out of this recession.
Their main argument for this is that somehow cutting what's legislated to occur in less than a year will result in bosses giving you a pay rise. But when they last cut super, that coincided with the lowest wage growth in history. Don’t believe them. https://theconversation.com/ultra-low-wage-growth-isnt-accidental-it-is-the-intended-outcome-of-government-policies-113357
