I think about Takasugi growing his hair and dropping the eyepatch A LOT. These things are packed with meaning. A short thread.
His hairstyle post SA arc resembles the one from his Shoka Sonjuku/Joui days aka the happiest years of his life. He has loosened up and his soul is no longer filled with crazy amounts of dread. He's back to just being a runt punk.
And him not hiding his eye anymore is a clear sign that he came to terms with his trauma and is actually healing from it. Him wearing his old Joui jacket is also a nice detail. This is the Takasugi we were always meant to see, this is who he ACTUALLY is.
I think his fight with Gintoki was the peak of his anger. It was a fight to let everything out. It's kind of ironic how such a ruthless fight between two ex best friends was the first step towards his soul –and, to an extent, Gintoki's soul as well– easing up from that pain.
Neither of them had to carry such tremendous amounts of weight alone anymore.
And!!! You can see as his eyepatch slowly tears apart!!! Which I think it's neat symbolism.

And I think that's the main reason why I love the way he died. He passed away with a peaceful smile, in the arms of his once best friend/partner in crime, happy that Gintoki will meet him again in the afterlife and they can go back to being punks and just fight for fun.
Takasugi died filled with bliss, because the only period of time in which he was truly happy was the time that featured moments like the ones Gintoki promised him before he dying.
Gintoki set him free from the anguish of always looking at his disheartened face too by offering him the sweetest smile I have ever seen him give to anyone. Gintoki is such a precious friend to have, and has so much care inside his heart.
That's it from me. Sorry for being a depressed homosexual.
