Man, the fact that the DNC is starting is dredging up a lot of my residual trauma from 2016, when I spent that convention with my hair on fire about watching the RNC descend into a fascist rally, but couldn't get anyone to care.
It'll be a great thing, telling future historians, "Well, the impending fascist threat was widely deemed less important than some irrelevant intra-Democratic party controversy that unsurprisingly later turned out to be Russian propaganda."
"So, the Republicans are running a fascist."
"Who cares? I heard Debbie Wasserman Schultz doesn't care for Bernie Sanders."
I'll never get over it.
"Who cares? I heard Debbie Wasserman Schultz doesn't care for Bernie Sanders."
I'll never get over it.
And while I think a lot of voters realized the error of their ways, the media hasn't learned its lesson and still blows every disagreement among Democrats way out of proportion while failing to capture how radical the Republicans have become.
Part of it is that so many journalists live in urban areas where most people are Democrats and so these intra-party conflicts have an outsized importance, in no small part because they reflect real social and cultural struggles within our narrow milieu.
For instance, a lot of intra-party fighting over female candidates is a stand-in for the way a lot of liberal men are anxious about the growing impact of feminism on their personal lives, from wives who expect them to do more housework to having to compete with women for jobs.
That Hillary Clinton became a lightening rod for that anger is, I suppose, no surprise. She literally transitioned from the role of supportive, self-sacrificing spouse to a politician in her own right: What every secretly sexist liberal man is worried about in his own life.
So yes, the rise of American fascism, as it was happening *somewhere else*, driven by people who seem like they might as well be from another country was hard for a lot of folks to pay attention to. They have personal issues to project onto party politics!
Anyway, it's wild that we have a president openly trying to steal an election and toying with snagging himself dictator-for-life powers, all because some dudes made "emails" an issue because they didn't want their own wives to start getting notions. /fin
