Telugu lands have rich folk culture. The word ‘folk’ means a culture, tradition or lifestyle limited and specific to a group of people or a particular community. Folk culture says a lot about a community's distinctive nature and uniqueness.
Similarly, tribes of Bhadrachalam have unique and distinct folk cultures associated with their traditional identities. According to the local legend, Sthala Purana, Lord Rama idol in Bhadrachalam temple was discovered by a tribal woman namely Pokala Dammakka, a Lord Rama devotee.
Lord Rama is believed to have appeared in her dream and told her location of the idol. Later, she tells this to Kancherla Gopanna who later constructs Bhadrachalam temple by installing that idol.
Dammakka Jatara festival in honor of Dammakka is celebrated by tribal people of Bhadrachalam. Dammakka Seva Yatra is also held in Bhadrachalam temple. Adivasi folk culture of Bhadrachalam and their relationship with Rama's temple is unique.
The rama temple is situated on the banks of Godavari river in the tribal heartland which is surrounded by Dandakaranya forests according to Ramayana Itihasa. Music amplifies distinctive qualities of folk culture.
Boatmen sing songs in praise of Lord Rama and Godavari river to ensure their boat passengers overcome their fear of mighty Godavari river during boat trips.
According to Ramayana Itihasa, it is believed that Parnasala was the place Lord Rama killed the golden deer (Rakshasa Maricha). Parnasala is located around 30 kms from Bhadrachalam temple town.
This song "Holesa Holesa" from Sri Ramadasu movie is an example of such Telugu folk song which is unique to tribal boatmen of Bhadrachalam.
This song highlights "Dammakka" character played by actress Sujatha who is seen singing praises of Lord Rama alongside tribal boatmen in their usual native slang which also beautifully captures the diversity of Telugu folk language and culture.
