Last night, four #BTV officers responded to a possible "untimely." A young woman had overdosed. Her companion, a medical worker, said she'd been unresponsive for about 10 minutes. She was discolored and not breathing. One officer administered #narcan; one started CPR. 1/5
After a few minutes of CPR, one officer relived the other. Roommates sobbed in the other room. Our partners at @Btvfire arrived and took over, including multiple uses of an AED. Responders got a pulse and transported the woman to UVMMC. 2/5
It was 2 min from the call to the officers’ arrival. They administered CPR for 4+ min before BFD set up. Firefighters worked for another 13. Meanwhile officers collected information and evidence associated with the overdose. From start to end they were on scene for 34 min. 3/5
Before returning to patrol, the three officers and their supervisor stood in the street and debriefed. They vented a bit. All four of them had thought she was already dead. But they had done everything in their power to change that. 4/5
A woman close to death brought back. Minutes of hard CPR. Agonized friends keening. Investigative work that still had to be done. Officers absorbed it all, and then moved forward. They still had five hours to go on their shift. 5/5
