We oppose @BettyMcCollum04’s latest anti-Israel initiative. Her new bill, introduced one day after the historic Israel-UAE reconciliation, undermines the very principles that have led to Arab-Israeli agreements. Threatening Israel’s security has never & will never lead to peace.
McCollum says the Israel-UAE deal “changes nothing.” We believe a better future is possible when Israel and the Arab world, including the Palestinians, work together. America should encourage other Arab states to recognize Israel & urge the Palestinians to return to peace talks.
Instead of encouraging Arab-Israeli reconciliation and negotiations to achieve a two-state agreement, the McCollum bill will do the opposite. It will weaken Israel’s security, undermine the U.S.-Israel relationship, and reinforce Palestinian resistance to direct talks.
The bill claims to stop U.S. aid from being used for annexation, however current law already prevents Israel from using our aid for annexation. Aid can only be used for “legitimate self-defense and internal security” and our govt reviews every Israeli purchase under this program.
The bill hurts Israel's ability to defend itself, restricting it from deploying lifesaving missile defense systems like Iron Dome, protecting its citizens from terror attacks, defending its eastern border, and protecting all of Jerusalem—including the Western Wall & Temple Mount.
. @JoeBiden said it's a "gigantic mistake" to condition/leverage security aid. Despite some policy disagreements with Israel, President Obama never called into question America's security commitment to Israel & his MOU (backed by Biden & Sen. Harris) had no political restrictions.
Unlike other allies, Israel insists on defending itself by itself, relying on America only to ensure it has the means to do so. A strong Israel advances our interests—including deterring war and promoting peace. Weakening Israel weakens us.
Peace can only come when Israel feels secure in the context of a rock-solid U.S.-Israel alliance. To advance the pursuit of peace, America should be bolstering Israel’s security and the U.S.-Israel partnership as hundreds of members of Congress have urged on a bipartisan basis.
Those seeking peace between Israel and its neighbors should be encouraged by recent events. Reconciliation has been achieved through dialogue, shared interests and diplomacy. Instead of expanding such efforts, this bill demonizes Israel and makes future peace less likely.
