Look, The Boys is fucked up. Think of a trigger it is probably in there and that's on purpose because they're also in real life. The Boys is what superheroes would be in this shitshow world, and it hits hard for that. Because as extreme as it is, it's all a little too believable.
I feel like a lot of spn fans will have issues with it because this fandom specialises in calling out problematic content. And the boys is that from start to finish. But it's problematic for very good reason.
If it stays comics accurate, Jensen's character is in fact homophobic. Because he's a parody of American militarism. Kill a kid and call it good. Suck a dick but don't call it gay. It isn't that the text is homophobic, it's that it's using homophobia to exemplify ignorance.
Everyone's gonna have to make their own call on it, but it pulls no punches. Rape, sexual assault, abuse, violence, death, incest, malevolent capitalism, terrorism. It's pretty heavy.
Now me, I enjoy its brutality. I also enjoy how smart it is at the meta level. But on the surface there's a lot of challenging stuff.
And, yanno, horny dolphins.
But if this doesn't sound like your bag, please don't just watch it for Jensen. You'll get yourself angry and upset. Because it wants to confront you and if that's not gonna work for you then a boy just ain't worth it.
