Debunking the economy vs environment: a thread.
the environmental destruction and human rights violations are often justified by the supposed economic benefits of pipelines but does that argument hold up?
Green energy already creates and sustains more jobs than
fossil fuels (300,000 in canada in 2019, expected to grow to over half a million this decade).
The oil and gas sector cut 53 000 jobs (about a quarter of their total)  between 2014-2019 in the midst of surging production due to increased automation
The jobs created from extraction projects are largely short term and unstable. Trans Mountain pipeline would create less than 100 long term jobs. Many of the construction jobs would not be local.
While oil workers face unemployment and anxiety, executives and shareholders profit.
From 2014-2017 the five largest oil sands producers paid shareholders (mostly not canadian) $12.6 billion in dividends.
Reliance on fossil fuels creates a boom and bust economy.
Switching to green energy is the only option for a sustainable economy.
