La Pausa means "The Pause" in Spanish and it's a skill that few footballers have in the world. The maestro of la pausa was considered to be Barcelona's Xavi and for a good reason. What we mean by la pausa is the act of standing still while having possession of a ball in space.
The effect of this is that it draws the defender to press giving the player in possession of the ball to pass in the space while the defender is out of position. So, basically he slows the game and then suddenly speeds up the play to exploit the space behind the defense.
Is that brief moment among chaos the player is able to see everything stand still and make the pass that the defense is not anticipating. The player is able to see everything clearly in that instant and he is able to destabilize the opposition.
Pep thrived at Barcelona by exploiting Xavi's gift and it also used this to his advantage in Man City. So, who's the player with La Pausa in Man City? There were actually 3 of them and none of them is Kevin De Bruyne. The answer is David Silva, Ilkay Gundogan and Laporte.
You might be surprised to see Laporte mentioned but try to pay attention of his passes. He is one of the few CB in the Premier League that is able to pass constantly between the lines instead of just passing it off to the fullback or the midfielder that comes to collect the ball.
Let's leave Laporte out of the discussion and concentrate on the only midfielder in the team with la pausa, Ilkay Gundogan. He is the to fill the void left by Silva although Silva himself was left out of big games this season and it was understandable having in mind his age.
With Silva's departure, Gundogan will be integral to Pep's plan will be responsible to provide the balance between defense and attack. He made 31 appearances last season and I have a feeling he won't be rotated that much this year.
Scored only 1 goal and provided 2 assists while Silva scored 6 and assisted 10. With Silva out of the picture Gundogan will take over the Silva's duties as the second playmaker behind the attacking trio (and yes Pep's way of playing requires 2 playmakers)
I think he is more capable of being involved in 20+ goals this year as Manchester are looking the only other contender for the trophy. At 5.5m he has a lot of value for a regular starter in a team competing for the title in comparison to other options at around the same price.
If you made it this far, thank you for reading and I hope you didn't instantly unfollowed me
I will save this tweet and I will come back to this subject at the end of the year and see whether I was wrong if I am I will analyse where things went south. TSB 0.4%
