Here are my 2 cents on the #BackToSchool issue in Ontario... Amid all the noise, opinions, and political posturing, the issue needs to be considered from an equity lens...not one that centres on the feelings of those in the GTA or urban settings... #onpoli (a THREAD)
There should never be a 1 size fits all approach. Different regions and locales have different circumstances. Some regions have had persistently low or negligible case counts. Others have high ones. The decision about a safe return will be entirely different across Ontario. /1
Some schools are larger, some are smaller. Some buildings are newer, some are older. The decision any parent/child takes has to be individualized to their particular circumstance and whether or not they feel there is ventilation, and the conditions for safe distancing. /2
Many of our friends and neighbours must consider that they need their kids in school so they can work and earn sufficient income. Not everyone has the same privilege and luxury of working from home or being able to ensure their kids can make the most of distance learning. /3
Also, every kid learns differently. Many kids at different developmental levels may thrive in one environment versus another. Most importantly, the needs of kids who learn differently or struggle with mental health difficulties need to be considered by schools and govt. /4
The discourse on school reopening has sadly created a lot more stress than necessary. The decision to send your kid back to school should be made at an individual level for every family and every child. Lets stop judging, shaming, blaming, and finger pointing. It doesn't help. /5
Lastly, if we do have a second wave, I hope that there is not a blanket decision to shut down all schools and a regional/individual approach is taken in each circumstance. We need to be guided by evidence, not politics. We need to prioritize well-being. END
