the symbolism in mac millers album swimming and how it relates to the great gatsby:)

if you don’t know, the great gatsby is a book/movie that is driven with symbolism throughout the entire story. if you haven’t read the book or watch the movie, i recommend that u should :)

okay so the first thing to point out is the pink linen suit he is wearing in the cover with a striped tie and a handkerchief in the pocket. in TGG, the suit represented hope as Gatsby wore it in hopes for his love with Daisy

in Run On Sentences Vol. 1, he used a clip from TGG as well, which could potentially mean that he has some relations to Gatsby, especially during the time of Swimming.

in the movie TGG, Gatsby was a wealthy, misunderstood guy, who was as deep as the ocean. Which is exactly how Mac perceived himself, as well as others did.

(SPOILER FOR THE MOVIE) in the end, Gatsby gets shot and dies in a SWIMMING pool.

at the end of the day, mac clearly knew what TGG was, and it left some sort of impression on him, and mac is always an in depth writer who has meaning behind every word, sentence, and breath. i hope u found this as interesting as i did!
