MONTEZ SWEAT THREAD:

It's hard to adjust to the NFL as a rookie. It's even harder when you're trying to play a position you really haven't played before.

This tweet sums up why he struggled at times and why I've probably been too critical of him: https://twitter.com/PFF_NickAkridge/status/1288865270401048578?s=20
By far his best play came in the run game. From the start of the season, he was constantly making plays as a run defender.

His 20 run stops were tied with Nick Bosa for the most in the NFL among rookie edge defenders.

Trying to block him with a TE is a bad decision...
Another part of his game that was instantly apparent was his athleticism and how quick he can close down space.

He is a ridiculous athlete as @washfootbaII pointed out in this tweet: https://twitter.com/washfootbaII/status/1231982532457123845?s=20
Looking at his pass-rush ability, he struggled at the start of the season to develop a 2nd move when he couldn't win with speed.

In the 1st clip, he's completely shut down. But, you can see in the next clips how he started to set up that inside move.
The growth as a pass-rusher was extremely encouraging to see.

In weeks 1-8, he had a:
- 51.7 pass-rush grade, 2 sacks, 13 pressures, 7.4% pressure %, and an 8% pass-rush win rate

In weeks 9-17:
- 66.3 pass-rush grade, 6 sacks, 20 pressures, 12% pressure %, and a 12.7% win rate
I'd love to see the new coaching staff use him in stunts more often. Last year Washington used a stunt on 10.9% of pass plays. That was 32nd in the NFL.

Let him take advantage of his athleticism and get him easier lanes to the QB.
This was one of my favorite plays of his last year. He forces the QB to roll out of the pocket and then shows his closing speed to force the throwaway.

After watching his improvement over the back half of the season, I'm pretty excited to see how his 2nd year turns out.
