A publicist gets your name in the news. They arrange photo ops, red carpet appearances, get you on guest lists of high-profile events.

They raise your profile & generate headlines.

In the marketing/communication world, publicists are viewed with barely-hidden contempt.
Strategic communications is 100% based on a...strategic plan that outlines goals & objectives, such as building a brand or positioning a power couple for income opportunities.

Every action refers back to those goals. If it doesn't further a goal, it shouldn't be done.
In #MeghanAndHarry's case, they desperately need a strategic plan to position them as philanthropists & brand ambassadors

They need to be respected & build credibility in order to make it on the speaker circuit. They need to be aspirational, not hypocritical.
While strategic comms sometimes uses publicity tactics -- known as media relations -- that's not the only function.

Publicity's only function is to get column inches & photos.

A publicist has a rolodex of reporters. A strategic communicator has the ear of the C-suite.
The hard part of strategic communications is staying focused on goals.

You can't get sucked into responding to every negative story or mention on the web.

After more than a decade in politics, I've seen many promising politicos brought down by focusing on negative press.
Right now, #MeghanAndHarry are stuck in this doom cycle of responding to negative press.

They can't rebuild their reputations & rebrand in the US until they get out of this tit-for-tat behavior. It makes them look thin-skinned & petty.
I cringe at the knowledge a Sunshine Sachs rep peddled the drone lawsuit to reporters on the royal beat.

Why? #MeghanAndHarry are looking like vexatious litigants. Why spread the news of another lawsuit? How does this make them appealing as speakers or brand ambassadors?
If the goal of the lawsuit was to send inform paparazzi & tabloids to not use drone photos, it was not a bad idea. However, those parties will find out without the lawsuit making headlines.

This is the 1 lawsuit I think is worthwhile, but they destroyed their credibility.
Pro-tips to #HarryandMeghan:

1. Stop reading headlines about both of you. Stop reading comments. Stop reading tweets. Hire someone to do that & only give summaries.

When I teach classes about political campaigns, this is one of the key points candidates need to follow.
2. Fire Sunshine Sachs. Hire an in-house strategic comms officer.

You don't need to chase publicity. You need to build credibility & respect. You can't demand 6-figures for speeches when getting the same kind of press as a Kardashian.

You need gravitas, stat.
3. Learn how to gauge public opinion. In strategic comms, this is known as environmental scanning.

Don't buy ostentatious houses during economic downturns. Don't fly private jets while preaching about environmentalism.
4. Reign in your fans.

Your brand is increasingly toxic due to Sussex Squad. I've been in digital politics since the 2006 cycle. They are up there w/ The Donald & Chapo Trap House on Reddit.

#HarryandMeghan: if you want to lecture about civility online, start with your fans.
Your fans are costing you income, #MeghanAndHarry

Brands & companies won't partner with someone if their online following has a reputation for toxic trolls.

Businesses interested in hiring you are checking the socials. Collaboration isn't worth trolls & toxic mean girl fans.
