I guess just "pay attention to things" is the best thing you can do but I have no idea how to cultivate that
I am fundamentally incredibly slothful maybe start there

Ok here is an idea perhaps
I generally tacitly and sometimes explicitly view life as operating in a narrative. Is this "true" who cares
What is important is that without some kind of narrative for your life you will probably go nuts and may already have done

Naturally life is different than a play because (i) you are already cast in your role, (ii) you simply must determine the scope of your part within your abilities and circumstances
Maybe much dismay can be thought of as resulting from a mismatch between ones "actual self" whatever that means and the narrative in which one is casting themselves
ie youre probably better off saying "who am I" and finding a narrative role that makes good use of the answer to that question than you are saying "this is the role I have decided I shall play" and bludgeoning yourself when it doesnt work with your character
