THIRD BASE COACHING THOUGHTS
1. Wear metal spikes vs. molded spikes/turf shoes.
2. When giving signals w/a runner on 1B move towards HP so the runner @ 1B is not blocked out by the P.
3. W/a runner on 3B & less than 2 outs, move up in the box so U can move towards the base line
as an impediment to runners who fail to react back on HH balls in the air to the OF.
4. On plays to 3B that will be close line up w/the throw so runner can get in the throwing lane. Direct slide direction based on throw.
5. Fast runner on 2B position down the line towards HP.
( Start well foul to avoid HH line drives pulled foul)
6. W/multiple runners, once you score a runner, drop back to pick up trail runners.
7. W/runner on 3B make physical contact every pitch after you finish giving signals.
8. W/runner on 2B & 3B & runner at 3B is running on
contact or on down angle, make sure runner on 2B knows.
9. Continually remind runner to check infield & OF & to retreat on line drives.
10. Have distinct ball in dirt or read carom hand signals.
11. Clear concise verbals to runner at 3B regarding 1st & 3rd double steals &
contact & down angle reads.
12. Establish consistent signal giving tempo.
13. Move towards HP to help runner at 3B establish his lead, especially vs. a shift.
14. Know where you are in the batting order/game.
15. You can’t score runs if U don’t try.
16. Tied, down one or
ahead:
A. If it takes a perfect play to throw a runner out, score him.
B. Gamble with two outs.
C. Batted ball hits the infield grass, then the infield dirt & finally the outfield grass, score the runner.
17. Do not touch the runner especially if a play is being made on him.
