here are some other more perennial reasons why nba ratings are down (good writers, feel free to steal): young people have been more disproportionally affected by job loss in the pandemic depression, and it makes sense to cancel an OTT cable subscription (because $0 > $60). 1/3
ESPN/ABC would both be affected by that. speaking of disney, its NBA coverage has been terrible for almost two decades (kendrick perkins should not have a soapbox, and they care more about advertising ESPN than good PBP), and with their aging halftime show, TNT is bad too. (2/3)
basketball is a great sport and deserves a broadcast partner that demonstrates the ability to properly market and create fanfare and importance behind its superior athletes: enough pitbull “playoffs” songs.

(along with curry and thompson, the lack of kyrie irving and kevin durant - charismatic guys who should be in their primes - is striking. kawhi is not the guy, lebron is aged out/a legacy, davis is weird, embiid is ok, the nuggets, celtics, jazz, pacers are just ‘teams’)
there are a lot of reasons - oh, i forgot, people don’t watch TV in august and basically never have - that aren’t “china, hmmm…” or “did black lives matter… too much??” behind whatever ~ratings woes~ exist. i’ll end with - this year is weird, so who cares?
