Relieved about #ALevelResults U-turn but make no mistake: the grading scandal has *already hurt* many students who have already had an impossible year.

Students facing the biggest barriers to higher education *and* to other destinations dependent on grades were hit hardest

The algorithm used to 'adjust' grades was baked in bias + prejudice. It *must* be made public

We need to know how it was created. We must ensure nothing like it is used again

It is indicative of problems devouring the heart of our education sector⬇️

No one should underestimate the harm the #AlevelResults scandal has already caused and which will persist even after this (overdue) U-turn.

Consider the impact of this on students' mental health and on their confidence as they prepare for their next steps, uni or otherwise

The chaos is not over yet, either

Many students will now be holding different grades to those on Thursday which saw them being told they'd missed their place

Solidarity to all who have been + will be continuing to staff the #Clearing2020 phone lines.

Hot on the U-turn heels = removal of the Student Numbers Cap: welcomed by many from an access perspective *BUT* it also means more 'poaching' of students by pre-92s + potential decimation of post-92s

And workloads will soar without proper resourcing

We *URGENTLY NEED* an unconditional #FundTheFuture bailout

Without it some post-92s will fold

As @UCU have doggedly pointed out, widespread job losses + uni closures would devastate local economies. It will also be awful for access and widening participation in those areas

Young people have blazed a trail: speaking truth to power, protesting, refusing to take #ALevelResults scandal lying down

We've seen better analysis from them than from many politicians + uni leaders (who have tended towards 'disgracefully silent')

We are in the fight of our lives for the Higher Education sector, and for equality and security within it.

We are also in the fight of our lives for safety at work - for *all* staff and students.

We need wholesale change.
