With the new season approaching and the @OfficialFPL game back, people are eager to get their 18368302 drafts set up. Whilst I am as eager as the next guy, I've often seen drafts with big hitting premiums and no room for value. Ultimately ending up with poor structure/balance.
While this may be the majority's way of playing, I do feel like you can get more out of your squad with balance and structure. Last season the top ten value players were;

Now of we look at the premiums and combine a couple and compare to value we can understand where the value lies in total points (the thing that matters most)
Salah/Mane = 24m pts total of = 454 compare to TAA/VVD/Doherty = 20m with pts total of = 555 = 101 pts swing. 4m cheaper

Let's take another example;
KDB/Auba = 23.5m, pts total = 457, VVD/ROBBO/RYAN = 18m, pts total= 494. 5.5m cheaper, 37pts gain.

With these two examples in mind I feel it's worth balancing the squad structure and not to ignore DEF. I've seen many drafts with TAA and 4x4.5 Def, which is fine - if you find the next Lundstram (R.I.P lord) but they rarely ever exceed the 100pts margin Shef being the exception
That 3/5.5m saving by adding the "PREMIUM" Value DEFs can stretch long way into your MID and FWD line, by having 2x 10+m (C) Premiums in these positions and adding the leftovers around the squad you can have a well rounded team which will more than likely reach 150-200 pts mark.
That 4.5m Fwd can become that 6-7 FWD, that 5m, can become that 7-8m. From my own personal preference & sticking to my guns, I'll be starting the season with a "set & forget" back 3 and focusing transfers solely on attack with balanced/flexible price points for maneuverability.
Also worth bearing in mind that each player carries a threat, whether that be corners, free kicks, penalties (talisman theory)
