Good morning. Save this thread because this is the only advice I have for “Maskne” aka acne mechanica.

Acne mechanica is when you develop acne-like bumps as a result of irritation caused by friction, heat, and sweat.
First things first: SANITIZE YOUR MASK AFTER EACH WEAR.

This means that you MUST wash your mask(s) daily. I recommend using a gentle, everything-free detergent with a smidge of bleach. Do not use fabric softener or scented detergents if you’re allergic.
If you have disposable masks, dispose of them hoes after every use. Disposable masks can’t be sanitized (I’ve seen too many conflicting reports about this so I’m gonna go with can’t).

If you put on a mask and leave your house, throw it away before you walk back inside.
Step 2: Hydrate, don’t exfoliate.

If you wear a mask for prolonged periods of time, do not apply any exfoliants beneath the mask. Leave those for your “out of mask” routine. Focus on keeping the skin hydrated.
Step 3: apply a very thin layer of an occlusive over the areas your mask covers to help create a barrier between your skin and the mask.
Step 4: Use surgical tape to secure your mask on your face. If the mask is kinda baggy and moves around on your face a lot, that will add to the friction. Surgical tape will help keep it in place and it’s safe for your skin!
Step 5: IF YOU HAVE BREAKOUTS, COVER THEM WITH COLLOIDAL PATCHES BEFORE PUTTING ON THE MASK. I like these from @herocosmetics for those who may have larger breakout areas.
That’s it. TL;DR hydrate and protect. Only apply exfoliants if you won’t be wearing a mask.
