Is sugar bad for you?

It depends on a lot of things and I'm going to explain it all.

Sugar is a type of carbohydrates (carbs) that is turned into glucose by our body. And glucose is the body's fuel.

There are two types of carbs. 1) Complex carbs (found naturally in foods) and 2) Simple carbs (added to foods)

Simple carbs found in refined sugar, candies, cola... cause a rapid spike in blood sugar levels followed by a rapid drop.

These spikes are bad for your body and linked to long term consequences like excess weight, diabetes...

Complex carbs found in vegetables, grains... are digested slowly and give the body the fuel it needs for longer. These carbs are well suited for your body and you need to get more of them!

Fruits are a little bit different given they contain simple and complex carbs.

When you eat a fruit's juice, you'll only get the simple carbs (part of the juice). But when you eat the whole fruit, you'll also get fibers, which help the body better slow down the digestion.

What about artificial sweeteners used in Coke Zero and other products? This is still a heated topic with so much going on.

I advise you to consume these products in moderation.

As a summary:
- Eat more complex sugars found in vegetables, grains, and natural food
- Eat less simple sugars found in candy, cola...
- Eat all fruits to get fibers. Avoid drinking fruit juices and go for smoothies instead.
