#1988Massacre of more than 30,000 political prisoners in Iran in a matter of few months.
32 years later, the perpetrators have not yet been held accountable and brought to justice!
2)
Most of the over 30,000 political prisoners executed were members and supporters of the Iranian opposition People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI), AKA the #MEK

#1988Massacre of political prisoners in Iran was based on a decree by regime founder Khomeini saying, “It's decreed that those who are in prisons throughout the country & remain steadfast in their support for Monafeqin [MEK]are waging war on God & are condemned to execution"
4)
But why?

On July 20, 1988, the regime agreed to a ceasefire in the 8-year war with Iraq. Khomeini described the decision as drinking a “chalice of poison.”

He needed something to neutralize the poison:
Eliminate all #MEK political prisoners = #1988Massacre
5)
Khomeini said war would continue until “liberation of Quds [Jerusalem] via Karbala [holy Shia city in Iraq].”
By eliminating political prisoners in the most vicious manner, he intended to maintain his grasp on power after humiliatingly conceding to the ceasefire.
6)
According to Khomeini's Fatwa, “Death Commissions” formed of 3 persons decided on the fate of prisoners in trials that lasted only a few minutes.

They asked if the inmate supported the MEK. Any sign of sympathy to the organization resulted in immediate execution
7)
Many of the victims’ corpses were secretly buried in mass graves. Those who saw it were bullied to remain silent.

To hide the massive killings, victims' families were threatened not to speak a word about the execution of their loved ones.

8)
To escape justice, Khomeini created a deceptively false narrative that #1988Massacre was a response to a military confrontation between the #MEK and the regime’s forces which started on 25 July 1988, whereas Death Commissions started their work on 19 July.

On 9 Aug 2016, a shocking audio file of Hossein-Ali Montazeri, Khomeini’s former heir apparent, was published in which Montazeri told a meeting of members of the “Death Commission” on 17 Aug 1988 that they were carrying out a crime against humanity.

In December 2018, @amnesty published a special report on the 30th anniversary of the massacre, “Blood-soaked secrets,” emphasizing “1988 prison massacres are ongoing crimes against humanity.”

Executions go on in Iran because #1988Massacre remains unpunished.

In her August 2017 report to @UN General Assembly, the late Asma Jahangir, Special Rapporteur on Iran, documented the events that led to #1988Massacre. "These events, known as the 1988 massacres, have never been officially acknowledged,” she wrote.

12)
Jahangir identified Ebrahim Raisi as a perpetrator who ordered extrajudicial executions in the#1988Massacre.

While the International Community & @UN ignored this & failed to hold Raisi to account, in Tehran he was promoted to head of Iran’s Judiciary in March 2019.
13)
Many of the Iranian regime’s most senior officials were members of “Death commissions” & directly involved in the #1988Massacre.

14)
The regime in Iran will not investigate its own crimes to bring perpetrators to justice. It is the duty of International Community & @UN to do so.

The #1988Massacre remains one of the darkest stains on the modern history of mankind.
15)
Call for Action! In the #UNGA session in Sep, World Comm. & @UN must call 4 independent international investigations on #1988Massacre, ending impunity of perpetrators & fulfilling justice for victims of this horrendous crime Write to your foreign minister and ask for it.
