So deserved!! Tony, Ed + their team's tireless, ground-breaking, and often behind-the-scenes work provides the foundation for effective climate communication by everyone from the Vatican on down. See below for 3 key findings that have shaped my own approach to communication: https://twitter.com/ClimateComms/status/1295384088606642176
1/ So often we group people into two categories: believers and deniers. But thanks to Ed and Tony's work we now know it's more accurate to think of people as falling into 6 groups. And my goal is to move people from Doubtful, Disengaged, or Cautious to Concerned and Alarmed.
(and as I discuss in this thread, I do not focus on Dismissives. Despite the fact that they are the loudest voices, thanks to Tony & Ed's work, we know they are only 10% of the population.) https://twitter.com/KHayhoe/status/1235204287891988481?s=20
2/ So often we focus on whether or not people agree with the science. But as these insightful @YaleClimateComm maps demonstrate, our real problem isn't what we think of the science: it's the fact that we don't think climate change matters to us. (they also have maps for Canada - in French and English - thanks to my co-patriot @mmildenberger and colleagues!) https://climatecommunication.yale.edu/visualizations-data/ycom-canada/
3/ Finally, over a decade of climate outreach has taught me that having a simple conversation about climate change is one of the most important + effective things each of us can do. But it took research by Ed & Tony, led by @MattGoldberg100, to prove it! https://www.pnas.org/content/116/30/14804.short
I cite @MaibachEd and @ecotone2's research in my TED talk https://www.ted.com/talks/katharine_hayhoe_the_most_important_thing_you_can_do_to_fight_climate_change_talk_about_it?language=en
And in nearly every communication talk I give, to tell the story of how and why we aren't acting on climate. Here's one from this past April if you'd like to see it in action!
To conclude, I would not be the communicator I am without @ecotone2 + @MaibachEd's work, and I know many others would agree. Their contribution is often silent and unsung, which makes this recognition all the more valued. Congrats guys - it's about time!
