What's happening in entertainment is a massive re-consolidation of power along the lines of what existed pre-trust busting. Streamers monopolistic power is only enforced by their IP ownership rules. Listen:
Netflix insists on owning all of the creator IP. That means that any long-term value generated from that IP belongs solely to the people who own stock in netflix: its executives and investors. NOT the creators.
Think about it like playing for a sports team. Yes, you get paid a lot, by the dynastic wealth belongs to the owners. That means the streamers have only accelerated the rate at which they use creative work to enrich the already wealthy.
Representation matters SO MUCH. But so does ownership. And right now, the massive streamers are taking ownership and selling representation and reaping the long term equity (literally, share ownership) for company execs and shareholders. THIS IS WHERE WE ARE.
