seeing someone describe the problem with the exam results chaos being that they ultimately most fuck up the kids whose C became a U and who were going to use uni to run as far and as fast as they could away from their little grey lives and towns and never stop really hit home
I was one of the “bright kids who’d do well no matter what”, but still took an unconditional at Aberystwyth for the guarantee of a place somewhere nice and to flee a weirdly chaotic home life and dull grey new town
I was very privileged to be able to do so and had teachers who encouraged me to take the entrance exam that got me the unconditional and a scholarship, but I don’t know if that would still be the case if I wasn’t predicted good grades
Most of my friends were also desperate for a route out of their chaotic home and sad town at any cost, without the extra support of teachers rooting for them like I had. Those Cs and Ds were absolute lifelines for them, and more important than any oxbridge place
