We need to start talking about racism IN the WNBA and W media coverage. We can’t say we’re the “most progressive fans” because 80% of our league is black when we give a majority of coverage to a handful of white players.
And this isn’t me putting anyone’s game down. But there’s a lot of STELLAR players that aren’t being covered, who happen to be non-white.
Sorry if this makes anyone uncomfortable but there’s no way to be “comfortable” with this shit.
I have no clue how this tweet blew up but I’m not responding to everyone individually. So for people asking for examples, here’s a few:
1. An announcer saying Stewie “makes him smile” while saying Candace Parker and A’ja Wilson don’t.
1. An announcer saying Stewie “makes him smile” while saying Candace Parker and A’ja Wilson don’t.
It’s a fine comment to say you like watching someone play a lot, but you don’t need to actively put two other people down to do it.
And I probably wouldn’t care if A’ja has been widely forgotten from all MVP talk despite having better stats than Stewie.
2. The narrative that the only reason Chennedy Carter is (or was, not sure how people are feeling because of her injury) the ROY frontrunner is because Sabrina got injured. Yes, Sabrina is good, don’t get me wrong! But this is a harmful story to keep pushing.
3. Sue Bird being praised on national TV for the Vote Warnock t shirt campaign (which I agree is brilliant) but Angel McCoughtry not receiving proportional national media attention for her petition to add Breonna Taylor’s name to jerseys for the entire season
Like she influenced nearly every league with this!
@SharonShyBrown @a_angeles4 @ariivory @elindsay08 @LaChinaRobinson @getdisdance and so many others have been talking about this wayyy before this thread. So if the things going on here make you angry like it makes me angry, follow them. They’re gonna change it.
